Barnsley Premier Leisure partners with Equity Energies

  • 41 My ZEERO eMeters installed

  • £5400 potential annual saving by consistently turning off gym equipment overnight at one location

Customer Needs

Barnsley Premier Leisure (BPL) is a community-focused charitable trust that manages health and fitness facilities across Barnsley, Bassetlaw, Mansfield, and Pontefract. These facilities include leisure centres, swimming pools, gyms, and golf courses, playing a vital role in enhancing the mental and physical well-being of local communities.

In 2023, BPL partnered with Equity Energies to progress on its Net Zero journey and lower energy costs. With energy being a major operational expense, gaining detailed insights into energy consumption at the circuit level became a priority. Recognizing the transformative potential of MY ZEERO and its actionable insights, BPL aimed to reduce both energy costs and carbon emissions through this collaboration.

The Solution Created by Equity Energies

Equity Energies collaborated with BPL to determine where MY ZEERO could have the greatest impact across their sites. Together, they devised an initial plan to install 41 eMeters at BPL’s six highest energy-consuming locations, monitoring 392 data points. These installations aimed to:

  • Identify energy waste, such as unnecessary out-of-hours consumption.

  • Detect trends and anomalies in consumption patterns to improve site operations.

  • Implement alerts on key equipment to flag deviations from expected consumption norms.

  • Uncover opportunities for further energy efficiency improvements, whether technological or behavioral.

Once the eMeters were installed and commissioned, Equity Energies onboarded BPL onto the MY ZEERO portal, enabling real-time energy consumption monitoring for each site. After collecting six weeks of data, we delivered an initial ‘Insights and Observations’ report. This report highlighted consumption trends and outlined actionable quick wins to reduce out-of-hours energy use. For example, optimizing BMS settings to ensure HVAC systems operate at the right times.

Since the initial report, the Data and Insights team from Equity Energies holds monthly meetings with BPL to review the outcomes of implemented changes. Additionally, we provide a monthly ‘Insights’ report that highlights further opportunities to enhance energy efficiency across their sites.

The Results

  • £5,400 potential annual saving by consistently turning off gym equipment overnight at one location*.

  • 41 eMeters measuring 392 data points in real time.

  • £8,400 potential annual saving on HVAC energy costs at one location by changing timings by 1 hour in the morning and afternoon*.

  • Site Managers now have visibility of their energy consumption in real time, allowing them implement changes to building systems.

  • Actionable insights have helped drive improved energy behaviours across the organistion.

  • BPL have set up energy focus groups to target areas for reducing energy consumption.

*based upon current energy costs and the implementation of behavioural changes.

Installing MY ZEERO and the expert analysis and insights from the team at Equity Energies helped us identify further areas within our portfolio where we could reduce energy consumption.
